_SOUND COLLAGE IN A DARK ROOM (2009)

_Sound Collage in a Dark Room (2009)

Sound Collage in a Dark Room is a video piece which shows the results of a formal investigation about the behavior of digital data when it is subjected to several processes of repetition. The piece studies the loss and generation of new information, reflected by the pixels which form the frames once the video is fed into a loop of playback and recording procedures. The work shows the autonomy of digital data and how it can evolve altering the original aesthetics and discourse of the video by modifying its visual and narrative qualities. The video begins with 30 seconds of a black screen and ambient sounds recorded with a camera. The recording is transfered to the computer only to be shown on the screen and recorded again using an external camera. This procedure is repeated 20 times. Then, the original darkenss disappears gradually, replaced by unsructured layers of hidden audiovisual data.
